Thanks to all the MSU students who have expressed interest in the
MSU kendo club and have tried our practices. In order to ensure that our newest members
receive quality instruction, I would like to request that people who would like to
join at this time defer until Spring semester 2009.
At that time, if you are MSU students, you might also be
interested in enrolling in KIN 102M which is an introduction to Kendo
taught by instructors ans members of the MSU Kendo club.

Congratulations to Wendy Chen for winning the competition for the
George K. Izui sensei scholarship. The scholarship provides her with a free
pass to the 2008 MWKF summer camp. Many thanks to the Izui family for
helping us to remember Izui sensei's many contributions to Midwest Kendo
by endowing this scholarship.

Congratulations to Amy Dawson for medalling in the women's division of EMU's
family taikai. This was Amy's debut outing as a shodan. Outstanding performance.
Other people we know who medalled: Ayako Hadano CMU Women's division and Katina
Mangus, who won the non-bogu division.

Saturday February 16, 2008, Jin Wook "Ryan" Kim and Amy Dawson participated in
the promotional testing at Seaholm High School in Birmingham, MI. Congratulations
to both of them. Ryan for gaining 1-kyu and Amy for achieving shodan. Following the
promotional testing, Amy, Ryan and I participated in a seminare and practice led
by Teramoto sensei. Winner of the ZNKR championship and captain of the Osaka prefectural
police team that won the Japan Police championships.
The next day, the team of Jin Wook Kim, Wendy Chen, Ron Fox, Matt Palmer and Amy Dawson
competed in both the individual and team competitions of the 2008 Detroit Rensei taikai.
This tournament is the 10th time Detroit has hosted this event. Ryan managed a 3d place in the
Mudansha division. While the team was knocked out in the first round by a strong Georgia Kendo Alliance
team, all members competed hard, and showed their best kendo, as well as showing the strong
fundamental kendo that M.S.U. practices.

Ron Fox, Wendy Chen, and Mathew Palmer travelled to Madison
Wisconsin August August 3-5 for the MWKF summer camp. The summer
camp was taught by Yamanaka Shigeki sensei, and Saito Shigeki sensei.
Both sensei are 8-dan Kyoshi, with Yamanaka sensei the winner of the
2005 All Japan 8-dan Championships. Camp was very instructive and difficult.
All had chances to practice with both senseis, as well as opportunities
for basic and waza practices. Pictures for the camp are available on
the
Battle Creek Kendo Club Website
